  1. 1. The actor I found to play the best emotion and creating empathy for the audience in Forrest Gump, was Tom Hanks (Forrest Gump).I feel like with growing up with "braces" on his legs, meeting Jenny, being bullied, having Jenny in and out of his life, going of war, his best friend (bubba) dying in war, being a shrimp boat captain, his mother dying, discovering he had a son, and Jenny dying I feel like he took on every role very well. I know throughout many scenes I felt the emotion and made me feel somewhat of how the actors/actresses felt. The scene where Jenny invited him to her house and he found out he had a son and his reaction was very believable, it even gave me goosebumps. It was a real reaction that someone would give if they just found out they had a son. In the movie I watched at home, The Fault In Our Stars, Shailene Woodley (Hazel), was a 17 year old who had cancer. Throughout the movie she fell in love with Ansel Elgort (Agustus Waters) and became best friends with Nat Wolf (Issac). I felt like Shailene Woodley did the best job at using emotion and making me feel how she felt. For example, when Gus took her to go meet her favorite author she could not breathe certain times and it is like everything Shailene Woodley did throughout the movie was so believable. These are the two characters I feel made me feel the most emotion.
    2. In my opinion, I feel that emotion is the most important item in creating a good acting performance. As long as you make it realistic and make the viewers actually feel what the actors/actresses feel throughout the movie. Without emotion I feel like honestly there is no real movie. There has to be some type of emotion throughout the movie to make it truly a good movie. For example, in Forrest Gump, when Tom Hanks's character (Forrest Gump) discovered he had a son with Robin Wright (Jenny). That was such a realistic reaction and I felt the way that Forrest was feeling at that moment. Another example, in The Fault In Our Stars, when Shailene Woodley was having troubl breathing and was dying in the hospital and her parents told her to its okay to let go, I cried and received goosebumps, because I know how much that hurts to have to try to accept the fact that the one you love is dying. So, that is why to me emotion is an important part in the movie.
    3. Meryl Streep is saying that acting is not about how you try to be another person, it is about how you are supposed to act and make yourself act like that. It is about how you change yourself to be that person not forcing yourself.

    1. When it comes to using and creating emotion and empathy, the actor/actress that achieved this the best is Gary Sinise And Mark Wahlberg who played Jack Salmon. The acting movement Dan Taylor revolved around was losing his legs during the Vietnam War, Taylor had never lost his legs in real life proving that he had to create empathy to portray First Lieutenant Dan Taylor. What would it feel like to not have any legs? To be a war hero but not feel like one? Gary Sinise's emotions made the acting believable, for instance the scene where Dan Taylor is in the hospital, feeling guilt and grief. He's lost his only way to live, he was suppose to die in war, however, it was stolen from him, Gary Sinise not only showed empathy, of a man losing his legs but he showed emotions of a man losing is way of life. When it concerns Mark Wahlberg, the acting movement that achieved emotions and empathy is the death of his daughter. Mark tapped into feelings he's either experienced or not to achieve the emotions Jack had. Wahlberg probably had never lost his daughter, although, he may have lost a family member during his lifetime. A few examples of emotions would be anger, sadness, confusion and grief. These are examples of their acting performances.

The most critical component in creating a good acting performance is chemistry. Actors and actress need to show chemistry whenever or wherever they're acting, between the acting and their co-workers. It's a form of realism that connects the film to the actors, for instance Tom Hanks (Forest Gump) and Gary Sinise (Lieutenant Dan Taylor) portrayed great chemistry between one another, from being in the war to sailing a boat to being millionaires. Mark Wahlberg (Jack Salmon) showed chemistry between Saoirse Ronan (Susie Salmon) numerous ways, one example of this is Mark being her on-screen father. When you think about it in a deeper meaning, the two had to connect in a certain way off-screen, to prove their chemistry. This is why chemistry is such a critical acing performance, if two actors cannot connect off-screen, how can they give a scene or an entire film it's realism?

Meryl Streep once said, "Acting is not about being different. It's finding the similarity in what is apparently different, then finding myself in there." Majority of people assume when one acts, they take an entirely different persona, who they are is non-existent and who they're meant to be acting is their life now (or until the film is completed). However, many actors and actress disagree with that statement, when they act, they find something that is the same as them. Something that glues the fictional character to the realistic person and they use it. This can also be said to be a form of Method Acting. The acting that Tom Hanks (Forrest Gump) and Mark Wahlberg (Jack Salmon) are perfect examples.

In Forrest Gump Jenny was the best at using emotion and empathy because in one scene it portrayed her throwing rocks at her former home she grew up in while crying and then falling to the ground. This made me feel distraught because all her negative memories came flooding back in.

In the movie I watched “Paid in full” Mitch was the best at portraying emotion and creating empathy in the audience. In one scene he is portrayed crying out full tears as he rants about hurting anyone who looked at him wrong or owes him money out of sadness of the kidnapping his little brother. He creates empathy well in this scene because he gets really emotional and actually makes it believable by crying actual tears.
      1. Which of the four elements of acting we discussed (dress, emotions, dialogue, chemistry) do you feel is the most critical in creating a good acting performance? Use examples from both films to support your argument.
Relationship/Chemistry is the most critical in creating a good acting performance. This is because this is the barrier between making the film believable or not. If we don’t believe that a characters mother isn’t his or her mother or his best friend isn’t his best friend then the film would ultimately not make any sense therefore it would not be a good film. For example Forrest’s love for jenny lead him to assault her boyfriend and help her out of that night club and lead him to hang out with her in that tree. The audience believed he was in love with her due to them holding hands in that scene and actually talking for hours. In “Paid in full” Mitch and ace were best friends and their third partner Rico betrayed Mitch by killing him and taking his drugs. The whole relationship with Mitch and ace lead them to become ultimately wealthy and when Mitch died in the end ace broke down in tears and stopped selling drugs. These are some of the ways relationship/chemistry is the difference between whether a film is good or bad.

Meryl Streep is referring to what is called method acting. This is because she states finding the similarity in what is different enhances you’re acting skills. For example training for a certain role like gaining weight or taking up a certain job to find similarities in what may be different to you.

  2. 1. in Forrest gump Tom Hanks was the main and also the best actor he did not only change into play the character but his voice, hair, clothing etc. also played the part. he changed his dialogue to sound southern and also make it sound like he was slow.
in the movie Call Me Crazy Lucy was also the main character and the best actor because she had schizophrenia and she never gave up on herself even though she heard negative voices in her head. she finish law school, and helped people that was going through what she was going through, but they situations were worst.

    2. i would say dress and wardrobe because hair makeup can give a person a role because what if the person in real life was very pretty but had to play a very ugly person or vise versa. bruises messy hair due, etc.

    3. meryl streep is saying acting is not being who your not its finding what similar betweeen you an the character your playing.

. Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump and Forest Whitaker in The Butler were the best at using emotion and creating empathy in the audience because in Forrest Gump, Forrest (Tom Hanks) was feeling some love when he meets Jenny (Robin Wright), and in The Butler, Cecil Gaines (Forest Whitaker) was giving some honor when he went to the White House to meet the presidents.

    2. Dialogue is the most critical in creating a good acting performance because in Forrest Gump, Forrest (Tom Hanks) was talking different with a southern accent, and talks courageous during a speech about the Vietnam War, and in The Butler, Cecil Gaines (Forest Whitaker) was talking natural with an American accent and he used it for his speech in the White House.

    3. Meryl Streep is saying that acting is the way to find someone the same in a different acting performance. For example, in both Forrest Gump, Tom Hanks is similar to Forest Whitaker in the Butler because, Forrest was using a lot of emotion and empathy in his life at the Vietnam War, and Cecil Gaines was using a lot of dialogue and speech in his life at the White House.

  4. 1) I believe that Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump and J.K Simmons in Whiplash were the best at using emotion in their respective films. In Forrest Gump, Tom Hanks is able to portray a naïve yet optimistic character while making him completely likeable. Scenes where he is intimate with Robin Wright showcases Hanks ability to connect with his co-stars and create real empathy for the audience. He makes us really care for a fictional character. J.K Simmons uses emotion in Whiplash, but in a different way. His emotions are more of anger and spends a lot of is screen time yelling at his co-stars. It really works well for his character as someone who is pushing to find the next best musician. You’d expect him to be less of a push over, and his emotions help showcase that he is anything but that.

    2) There are four components of acting that contributes to a great performance. The dialogue, the chemistry, the dress, and the emotions. Out of these four, I think that emotion is the most critical in creating a good acting performance. An actor can be given a great script with great dialogue to work with. However, if there is no emotion behind the words, then it isn’t effective at all. Take Whiplash for example, J.K Simmons’ character is a teacher who yells towards his students. If J.K Simmons was to just say the lines without any emotion put behind it, then it would be less believable, and take the audience out of the movie. Or another example would be the film Forrest Gump. Actor Gary Sinise, who plays as Lieutenant Dan Taylor, is able to put forth so much emotion behind his character. You really begin to empathize with him when he loses his legs. He gives a really great impression of a depressed alcoholic. And it’s not because he flat out says: “I’m a depressed alcoholic.” It’s because his emotions display all that needs to be said about his character. Emotion is the most important aspect in acting.

    3) Meryl Streep once said, “Acting is not about being someone different. It’s finding the similarity in what is apparently different, then finding myself in there.” I believe she is saying that a good actor can relate to their character and put themselves in the shoes of the character. Rather than turning into someone else in a role, try to find yourself in the role. This is what most, if not all, method actors do, and it eventually turns into something amazing. For example, Tom Hanks as Forrest Gump, you can tell that he didn’t just read lines off a piece of paper, he actually became that character trough use of emotion, chemistry with other actors, wardrobe, and dialogue. A lot of actors today has the potential to do the same. For example, O’Shea Jackson Jr. in the movie Straight Outta Compton. He really became the role of his father, got down the mannerisms, the expressions, and the voice. Being able to get lost in the character is the definition of great acting.

  5. 1.) In the movie Forrest Gump i feel like the best actor to create emotion in the movie was Tom Hanks (Forrest Gump) Because of all the experiences he went through. As a child he didn't fit in well, and as he got older he went through certain experiences and met certain people. For example the friend he made when he joined the army, truly they both got close and made plans for the future until his friend died during battle, it was a sad/touching moment in which i felt empathy for Forrest. The Movie that i watched -The Notebook- it was a truly a sad movie mainly of the main actor, Ryan Gosling. Ryan Gosling played Noah calhoun who was head over heals for the actress Rachel Mcadams who played Allie Hamilton. The movie created a empathy for the characters since they both were crazy about each other until Rachel (Allie) moved away and Ryan Gossling (Noah) was just extremely depressed and joined the army. Ryan gave a good impression of him being depressed and not knowing what he wants to do anymore. Later on in the movie, he end up growing a beard, seems more depressed and starts working on his "dream house" in which he promised Rachel in the past. This shows he cared for her and couldn't stop thinking of her.

2.Emotion is important when it comes to good acting performance because the audience should be able to feel what the characters are feelings, its the emotions that really get to people. For example in the movie Forrest Gump, when Tom Hanks was in battle and was trying to search for his friend Bubba, he kept going back and kept saving people. No matter how hard he tried he couldnt find his friend, instead he kept saving other people, until he did find bubba he was wounded. The way Tom Hanks showed emotion and the dialogue he used created a feel of sadness, his close friend died at war. In the movie The notebook, towards the end of the movie Ryan Gosling and Rachel kept arguing, this created a chemistry between them, Ryan ending up telling her how he didnt want her to leave, he used emotion to create a sense of empathy.

    3. What Meryl Streep is trying to say is acting is not aobut turning into a different person, its about finding whats similar between you and the character that your playing, and explore that part more. For example in the movie batman, the person who played the Joker found what could be similar between him and the character and explored that part more. He locked him self in the hotel room to explore the different voices in his head so he could be familiar with the role he is playing, this is what made is acting better and enjoyable for the audience to watch.

    1. Tom Hanks was an actor who well expressed his emotion toward Robin Wright. In the scenes whenever Robin Wright showed up Tom Hanks would always light up as if it was the first time they would see each other, they would always pick up where they left off. This made their role more successful on how the reached out to the audience. In the film what’s eating Gilbert Grape, Darlene Cates was an actress who well expressed her pain. In the scene when for the first time in over 7 years she went out, I as an audience, I was able to feel her frustration/ humiliation she was feeling from people staring at her. Cate’s acting was successful on penetrating her emotion into the audience.

    2. What creates a character is their emotion, their emotion is what creates the character is what makes up who is the character. For example in Forrest Gump, Tom hanks was able to well develop the character with its emotion I was able to see how strong was the character. I was able to see that Tom Hanks got emotional every time he would see Robin Wright. For example in the scene where Tom Hanks finds Robin Wright in the bar and sees how men are treating her, he gets angry. That characteristic of him shows the audience how he feels about Robin, who makes his role more powerful and we are able to see that his emotional state is more visible when Robin is around. In the film what’s eating Gilbert Grape what was successful is Jonny Deep’s chemistry with Juliette Lewis. Their chemistry was strong, in the sense that as they saw each other they were able to connect immediately. Deep and Lewis’ relationship made their roles successful and powerful in the scene of when Leonardo DiCaprio ran away because Jonny Deep hit him, and Leonardo ran to Juliette, Deep saw them together you were able to see that his love for her grew more seeing her taking care of his brother. After that scene Deep and Lewis connected more and more that their relationship was very believable. Chemistry with actors is very important as you can see that chemistry/relationship is what also makes a role powerful. It is what makes roles more real to the audience where there that connection between actors.
    3. Meryl Streep is saying in the quote that an actor is not only to act out the role, but to find the similarities between the character and themselves so they can be more the character but still be themselves. For example in Forrest Gump, Tom Hanks had a difficult role but he was able to find the similarities between the character and himself and act out his character with power because he was able to identify himself with some of the characteristics of the character. Another example is Leonardo DiCaprio in what’s eating Gilbert Grape, at that time he was only 19yrs old, his role was based on an 18yr old boy who had a mental disability. He also had a difficult role, but he was able to find the common between the character and himself that made his role easier to act out successfully. Both actors didn’t just act out the character but they were able to see themselves in their situation which made their roles more powerful.

    1) The actress in Forest Gump that was the best at using Emotion/Empathy was Robin Wright who plays Jenny Curran. Throughout the movie Robin Wright displays a lot of emotion that you are able to feel. For example, one part that she displays a lot of emotion is when her character Jenny goes through a lot of phases throughout her life. Jenny goes through a hard time in her life and Robin Wright portrays that in a way where the audience can feel her pain and we sympathize for her. Another example is when Robin Wrights character Jenny and Tom Hanks’s character Forrest Gump went for a walk toward the ends of the movie and they walk past the house where Jenny grew up in, she started to cry and started throwing rocks at the house and breaking the windows. I feel that Robin Wright did a good job portraying how hurt her character was. You saw the pain in her eyes and you felt how upset she was when she was looking at the house. The actress in the movie that I watched outside of class, The Longest Ride, that was the best at using Emotion/Empathy would be Brittany Robertson who plays Sophia Danko. Throughout the movie Brittany Robertson’s character deals with a lot of changes that make her emotions run wild. One example of this would be when he boyfriend gets seriously injured in a bull riding accident. Throughout that whole scene you could really tell that her character was in a lot of pain and she was really worried. As a viewer I was able to feel the pain she was feeling I was worried if he was going to be okay or not by how she was acting. Another scene where Brittany Robertson made me feel what her character was feeling at that moment was when she got the phone call that Ira dies. Her tears seemed real and the way her voice was breaking really made me feel how hurt she was. An actor/actress that can make the audience feel what their feeling is a good actor.

    2) I feel that of the four elements of acting we discussed (dress/wardrobe, emotions/empathy, relationship/chemistry ,dialogue/speech) relationship and chemistry is the most critical in creating a good acting performance. In both films the main characters had a chemistry that felt real. Since both films had a romantic piece to it, if the characters chemistry didn’t seem real then the whole film wouldn’t be good. In Forrest Gump, Tom Hanks and Robin Wright had a believable chemistry from when the movie started and they were kids till they were older and married. The chemistry stayed consistent throughout the whole film. In The Longest Ride Brittany Robertson and Scott Eastwood had a real chemistry that stayed the same throughout the whole film. When the characters were supposed to be intimate, you felt the chemistry between them the whole time. Even when the characters were arguing you were still able to see that spark in the actors eyes. If the relationship/chemistry in the movie wasn’t believable, especially since they are both romantic movies , the whole movie would be thrown off. For this reason I think that relationship/chemistry between actors is the most critical in creating a good acting performance

    3) “Acting is not about being someone different. It’s finding the similarity in what is apparently different, then finding myself in there.”
    ― Meryl Streep

I think that what Meryl Streep is saying is that when you act it’s all about finding what you and the character you are trying to be have in common and use that to help you be like that character. In other words you don’t just act like the character you are trying to be. You use who are and try to put yourself in their situation. For example if someone was trying to be someone who went through a rough breakup but that never happened to them however something very similar happened to them, they can use that and try to remember how they felt during that time and try to imagine how there character would feel. All in all, when your acting its not about just acting like a whole different person, its about trying to become that person.

  8. 1) The actor Tom Hanks in Forrest gump was the best at using emotion and empathy in the audience because his character Forrest had a lot of emotional events that happened on his journeys and also his life. For example, him having braces at a young age, going to war, losing his best friend bubba, his emotions for jenny (played by Robin Wright), then finding out that he has a son would make the audience feel what he's feeling.
    - The actress Kate Winslet in Titanic was the best at using emotions and empathy in the audience because even though she got older, she still tells the story of her finding her first love on the titanic which was Jack played by Leonardo De Caprio and trying to decide whether she wants to stay with her fiance who her mother prefers. kate made the audience feel her joy, and also her pain by playing the character as if her and Leonardo were really lovers.

    2) I feel like emotion is the most critical in creating good acting performance because what most viewers wants when watching a movie is feel what the actor is feeling. for example, in Forrest gump Tom Hanks played Forrest very well by using emotions for his love for jenny and keep loving her even though jenny wasn't that that deeply into him. Another example is in Titanic when both Jack( leonardo de caprio) and rose (Kate Winslet) developing emotions to each other right after meeting each other for the fist time and also deciding whether she wants to marry her fiance or follow her heart and be with jack.

    3) Meng Streep is saying that acting is not just pretending to be someone else, but finding yourself into the character that you're playing and find the similarities that you and the character have. In titanic, even though Kate winslet and Leonardo De Caprio were not actually together, their chemistry in the feel makes us the viewers have hope and also fantasize that they have good chemistry together and same goes for tom hanks and robin wright in Forrest Gump because of them keeping the chemistry that they had since they were younger.

    Acting Analysis Questions

    1. I believe that Tom Hanks used emotion the best when it comes to creating empathy in the audience. Tom Hanks is able to play a character that goes through struggles and the whole time he is believable. I the film Taxi Driver, Robert De Niro uses emotion the best in this film. Throughout the film we see the changes mental health change through the film with his character.

    2. The most critical element that creates a good acting performance is emotion. Emotion is important because it makes the viewer’s feel like they are watching an actual event, not someone acting it out. Tom Hanks makes Forest Gump believable by the emotion that he shows through the character, like when Forest is with Jenny, Tom Hanks makes me believe that they actually know each other. In Robert De Niro’s role as Travis he shows emotion clearly. In the scene that Betsy leaves Travis the audience can see the toll that it takes on him. De Niro also has his character go through different levels of mental health and it is all believable.
3.“Acting is not about being someone different. It’s finding the similarity in what is apparently different, then finding myself in there.”
    ― Meryl Streep
When Meryl Streep says “Acting is not about being someone different. It’s finding the similarity in what is apparently different, then finding myself in there.” I think she is saying that actors shouldn’t be pretending to be a character, but should actually try to relate to who you are acting as. This may not apply to every actor but this can be part of her Method Acting. Other actors may have different ways of getting into character.

    1) I believe that Gary Sinise playing Lieutenant Dan Taylor was the best at conveying emotion and emathy because he had to show how he wanted to die with his men in war and he did. To portray such frustration, anger and sadness all in one I believe you have to be a good actor. He also was amazing at showing how the charcater felt having no legs beautifully. My heart broke from his performance. The film I chose was Gone Girl. Rosamund Pike played Amy Dunn in it and portrayed empathy amazingly as well. Throughout the entire beginning of the film she had convinced everyone including the audience that her husband wanted to kill her and to feel sorry for her. As the character she would sneak around the house and react to her husband pushing her and the emotion on her face really made you believe that she was in an abusive relationship.
    2) I believe that dialogue is the most critical element in a good performance. Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump portrays this because his speech and the things he says made you actually believe that he was mentally challenged. The accent he did came so naturally to him and felt so real that the character was completely believable. In the film I chose, Gone Girl, Amy Dunn had to have a very specific dialogue otherwise the 2 sides of her character wouldn't be believable. For instance throughtout the first half of the movie she had a voice over of the diary she wrote and the words needed to be chosen carefully so that what she was saying would come across the way the director wanted it to. She talked about all the terrible things that the character Nick would do to her and just hearing the quiver in her voice made you feel for her. But towards the middle she had to say things that made her ssem sinister, evil and selfish. A film with bad dialogue can ruin the film itself.
    3) The quote by meryl streep means, to me, that you do not have to change who you are when acting, You do not need to try and be another person. To act, is to recognize the differences you and the character have and then try to relate to them. Acting is to to put yourself in the character's shoes for a while and and try to find yourself in there.

  11. 1.The actor that showed the best at using emotion and creating empathy in the audience was Forrest Gump who was played by Tom Hanks because when it come to Jenny who played was played by Robin Wright he would always have a soft spot for her and even when she would up and leave she always came back because she knew how much Forrest really cared for her. Forrest emotions showed towards the end when he found out that he had a child and couldnt believe that he was nothing like him when he was younger. She knew that Forrest would do anything and everything for her so thats why she told him about the child when she was slowly dying. The character from my movie was Carlina and emotions and empathy was shown more when she was devastated when her kidnapper mother wasnt telling the truth about who she was and Carlina( Keke Palmer) knew the truth already but she just wanted to hear it from her mother which she never told her. Empathy was shown well when even though her kidnapper mother ruined her life she still had a heart and let her daughter come see the mother in jail to show that through anything she still cared about her . Her mother never told her about herself and lied about her whole life but Carlina ( Keke Palmer) felt that they could leave the problems behind and move on with their lives.
    2. I feel that emotion is the most critical in creating a good acting performance because without emotion the audience wont really feel how the actor feels. With their being no emotion in the movie the film isnt all that great because its good to know that other people watching the movie can have some type of connections with the actors feelings. For example, when Jenny ( Robin Wright) told Forrest Gump ( Tom Hanks) he had a child he was so emotionally shocked and showed happiness that he created a child that was nothing like him when he was younger . When this scene was shown i felt it for him because I know that Forrest ( Tom Hanks) is a kind and sweet person inside. Another example, in the Abducted : The Carlina White story , showed true emotions when Carlina ( Keke Palmer) found her biological parents and didnt know what to do at that moment. She felt different towards her biological mother Sherri Shepherd ( Joy White ) because they had nothing in common since she was not around her whole childhood. I felt heart broken at this part because she was tryna find her real mother for so long and when she finally met her she felt so uncomfortable and started distancing herself until she was ready to reach out to her real mother .
    3. Meryl Streep is saying that someone who is playing the role can put themselves in the character position where they can make it look realistic to others instead of them finding another way to be someone else. For example , in ForrestGump ( Tom Hanks) showed that he was really dedicated to his role and while playing his parts you can tell that the emotions during scenes where real because he didnt try to hard it just came natural for him.

  12. In my opinion Tom hanks from Forrest Gump and Al Pacino from Scarface were the best at using emotion and creating empathy in audience. Both of these actors had to be something that was not in real life. In the movie Forrest Gump you see Tom Hanks acting really naïve and always speaking what is on his mind, and in the movie Scarface Al Pacino acting stood out. He does what he wants to do and just like Tom Hanks, he is always speaking his mind.

Emotions are the most critical in creating a good acting performance. In the movie Forrest Gump, Tom Hanks when he finds out he had a child with Jenny, he broke down into tears. These emotions help push the movie without using dialogues. Another example is when Black Panther assaulted Jenny, Tom hanks got angry and hit him. That’s when Tom Hanks found anger in himself. He always brings up his emotion when Jenny is around. In the movie Scarface, Al Pacino had a many emotions in that movie. For example, when he starts to work for Frank. He was really happy because he knew he was going to make a lot of money. But the way he was acting you could feel his happiness too. Another example is that when he sees his best friend Manny with his sister. That really got him angry and that was also the first time he got angry at his sister and his best friends Manny. But the way he put out his emotions you could see his anger, like it really happened in real life.

Meryl Steep is saying that about your role in the movie. It’s about finding similarities in that role

  13. 1. The actress in Forrest Gump that was the best at using emotion and creating empathy in the audience is Robin Wright. She played Jenny in the film. Jenny is a troubled character. Every time that Forrest ran into her, or when they ran into each other, there was something going on with her that made the audience question her and feel bad for her. She posed for playboy and from then on, she was messing her life up by going through different phases in her life. The audience feels for her while she is trying to figure out who she is and trying to find herself. Especially towards the end when she saw her old house is when the audience really felt what she was feeling. Her father was the blame of her being messed up and she was reminded of what her father did to her when she saw the old house. When she started to throw rocks at the house, it was believable that she looked angry and she looked upset. Robin Wright is a great actress when it came to portraying her emotions and the lost feelings that Jenny felt. Her acting fit well into the character of Jenny. To play the role of Jenny, you need a lot of emotions and be able to show the audience what she is feeling and Robin Wright did an amazing job at that.
The actor in The Boy in the striped pajamas that was the best at using emotion and creating empathy in the audience is Jack Scanlon. He played Shmuel in the movie. In the movie, even though he was a little kid, he was amazing at portraying the emotion that is necessary to be a Jew during this time. For example, in the scene where Bruno gave him the food, Jack Scanlon really ate the food like he hasn’t eaten really anything in days and looked to appreciate the food. Also, during the scene, Bruno was playing with the ball, and told Shmuel to catch it. Jack Scanlon genuinely looked scared and wanted that ball nowhere near him, and threw it back to Bruno like he was terrified of it. Also, later on in the movie when Shmuel said that he couldn’t find his father, he looked so sad and so preoccupied. He was a kid while playing this role, and Jack Scanlon acts better than some adults. From the emotions he showed throughout the movie, it was so believable and realistic.

  14. 2. Out of the four elements that we discussed of acting, I believe that emotions are the most critical in creating a good acting performance. In Forrest Gump, Gary Sinise who played Lieutenant Dan, had very emotional scenes throughout the whole movie. For example, when the character that he played lost his legs and when he woke up Tom Hanks and told him that he would rather be dead than be the crippled that he is now, Gary Sinise portrayed so much emotion and his emotions were switching rapidly in that scene. That is hard to do and he did it. The scene was powerful and really helped viewers to see the emotional side of the character. Also, in the Boy in the Striped Pajamas, Jack Scanlon had to play a very emotional part in the movie. He had to play Shmuel who was the Jewish Kid in the concentration camp that Bruno befriended. Shmuel in general is a hard role to play for a kid because there is so much emotion that needs to be utilized in the scenes. In the scene when Bruno asked him what he did wrong, and Shmuel answered back that he Jewish, it was so powerful and emotional. This scene made viewers feel emotions like anger, sadness, and sympathy. Just one sentence with so much emotion connected to it, can change a whole scene and a whole conversation.
    3. Meryl Streep said “Acting is not about being someone different. It’s finding the similarity in what is apparently different, then finding myself in there.” This means that to be an actor, you just don’t act like someone else, but you picture yourself inside the situation that the character is in. When someone acts, they identify themselves with the character to figure out their true emotions and how it feels to be in that situation. Some actor put themselves in situations similar to the ones in the films that they need to portray. For example, Shia Lebauf had to play a drug addict in a movie, and he actually took a drug, LSD, to portray real effects of the drug so it can be as real as possible. Some actors will go to great lengths to identify themselves with the character and some actors can just identify with characters just by thinking od situations, but at the end of the day, actors need to identify with the characters that they are playing in order to act sufficiently.

    1. In my opinion, I believe that the best actor from Forrest Gump and Taken From Me: The Tiffany Rubin Story is Tom Hanks and Taraji P Henson. In the action, romantic drama film Forrest Gump, Tom Hanks was such an enthusiastic actor and took pride in his performance. For example, in the scene when he was in the Vietnam War with his team of soldiers, an explosion broke out and killed a lot of men. He then started looking for his best friend Bubba (Mykelti Williamson). As he was running around in the woods, he eventually found his best friend lying on the ground on the verge of dying. In this scene, I felt every emotion and every thought that was going through Tom’s mind in that very moment. The way he looked at his friend dying and seeing his reaction to everything felt real. I believe that if your acting affects the audience, you are a brilliant actor and that’s what makes a movie great.

In my opinion, I believe that the best actress from Taken From Me: The Tiffany Rubin Story, is Taraji P. Henson. In this drama film, Tiffany’s son has been kidnapped and taken to Seoul Korea by her ex named Jeff (Sean Baek). One of the many reasons why I chose her as the best actress is because of her performance in the scene when she was speaking to the authorities in the United States about where her son has been taken and the process of getting him back which was a very over whelming scene to watch. You can see the fear in her eyes and feel the emotions she was feeling which was angry and disappointed. She was yelling at the woman who was supposed to be helping her, but she didn’t feel like she was doing her job. She looked extremely angry and felt impatient because of the situation that was occurring. In this scene, you can see the look on her face which was nothing but determination to get her son back. It was as if this was happening in reality. That’s how strong her emotions were and that is what makes acting great.

    2. Out of the four elements of acting, I feel like emotions and dialogue is the most important feature in creating a good acting performance. I believe this because emotions are one of the strongest effects in a movie. Seeing the actor’s face, reaction and getting the same feeling they feel is what makes an acting performance feel real. For example, in the movie Forrest Gump, there was an intimacy scene with the actor Tom Hanks and actress Robin Wright. In this scene, both actors looked like they had a deep connection. It was as if they weren’t filming a scene, it looked like they really wanted to do it and the emotions and feelings in that scene felt real. In the other movie, Taken From Me, there was a scene where the actress Taraji P. Henson was putting her son to bed and they were saying a night time prayer. I feel like when it comes to dialogue, it’s not about what you say, it’s about how you say it and how you perform the line. Just from that scene, you can definitely see the bond and strong connection with her son. The way she looks at her son and cares for him defines a true love of a mother. The scene reminded me of me and my mom when I was young, she would put me to bed and pray the rosary.

    3. Acting doesn’t turn you into a different person, but it brings out the other side of you mentally and emotionally.

  16. 1. The best actor in Forest Gump that showed the most emotion Is Tom Hanks that played as Forest. Tom created a relationship with everyone in the film , but he showed the most emotions towards Robin who played as Jenny . When Tom meet Robin it was like love at first sight for him and they connected quickly. As the movie progressed he began to grow more and more feelings , even though Jenny use to play with Forest Emotions that didn't stop him from going after her continuously. After all they got married and became a happy couple . The actor that showed the most emotion in Romeo and Juliet is the actor that played as Romeo because he showed how much he loved and cared for her even though he know his family hated her family. Even though they relationship was hidden from their families , emotions from Romeo was still being showed towards Juliet in various ways . Forest and Romeo both showed emotions through the films the most towards their crushes .
    2. The most important element in acting is relationship. It is important for the audience to know how well your relationship is with the other character(s). In the movie Forest Gump , Forest had a relationship with everyone expect for his dad because he really wasn't there . Forest and Bubba had a good friendship and you could tell by the way they actions were towards each other . In Rome & Juliet both of their families had bad relationship towards each other because they hated one another , this cause them to not want Romeo with Juliet and vise versa .
    3. I think the quote is saying that its not about being different but its about finding yourself in different positions doing different things thats not you .

  17. 1- Based on the 1994 movie Forrest Gump, the actress I felt was best at portraying real emotions and empathy through the acting is Robin Wright. Robin Wright character Jenny Curran can at times be confusing to some viewers but can also be misunderstood by many through her actions in the film. Jenny is portrayed as a troubled and extremely lost character. From the very beginning of the movie, her true emotions may not yet be detected by some, but a scene in particular that showed Robin Wright character vulnerable at a very young age was the scene when we the viewers first learned that jenny as well as her two sisters as been abused physically and sexually by her abusive father. The scene I felt showed her true emotions and empathy was when she asked her Tom Hanks character Forrest Gump to pray with her, she prayed to God asking him to make her into a bird so she can fly away! Away from her unhappy home and life, that scene in particular I felt was full of emotions because as a little girl, she’s ideally supposed to be happy and carefree but instead she’s unhappy and praying to be sent away. Matthew Macfadyen character Mr Darcy in the 2005 pride and prejudice was at first a very unemotional, arrogant wealthy man with no doubt no realistic feelings. but towards the end of the historical yet romantic film, Matthew Macfadyen character Mr Darcy switches gear in the scene when he finally marries his lover Keira Knightly character Elizabeth Bennett, during the scene he shares his true feeling towards her by telling her how much he loved her and would never leave her. The scene was profoundly realistic and emotional because Matthew Macfayden characters true feelings for Elizabeth felt real and honest.

2- Emotions tell the truth. So in my opinion emotions is the most critical in creating a good acting performance. The connection between actors and the audience is a thin line but is very important. The audience needs to be able to feel the emotion from their seats as if they were in the actual film. An example goes back to the movie Forrest Gump, the emotions in the actor Tom Hanks with his character Forrest is so relatable to the audience like myself because in several scenes he proved that just because he faced different obstacles than most people he was still positive and the positivity in his acting was so realistic and relatable I thought I personally knew his character. Pride and Prejudice actress Keira Knightly emotions showed in the scene when her character Elizabeth Bennett loves Matthew Macfadyen character Mr darcy for the first time. When she first realized it she cried, and that emotion felt so real to me because she her as an individual and her character became one.

“Acting is not about being someone different. It’s finding the similarity in what is apparently different, then finding myself in there.”
    ― Meryl Streep
3- I believe Meryl Streep is trying to explain to us that acting is not just about having a different identity, but finding the difference within yourself and the character and still find ways to make the similarity overrule so that the audience feel a connection. An example is the pride and prejudice, Keira Knightly connection to her role in the movie showed how dedicated she is through her emotions.

1.) The actor that played the best emotion and empathy role in Forrest Gump was Gary Sinise (Lieutenant Dan). He showed the audience that he was frustrated, angry and sad and how hard it was to have no legs. He blamed Forrest for saving his life because he wanted to die in war. All the people he trained ended up dying in war. I started to believe the character that he was creative and good actor. The actor who played the best emotion and empathy role in Silver Linings Playbook was Bradley Cooper. He was diagnosed for a mental illness and was sent to a mental hospital in Balimore. His wife cheated on him by having a affair with the history teacher he worked with. He beat him up to death and nearly killed him. When he came back from Balimore he did everything he would to get back with his wife. He was hurt over the fact that she moved on and didn't want to see him or have any sort of contact with him. I started to believe that he was hurt because the empathy he portrayed made me feel sorry for him.

2.) I believe that emotion/ empathy is the key to good acting. The actor/ actresses goal should be to make the audience feel what they're feeling and they should be able to connect with them. I feel like without emotion/ empathy the movie is incomplete. The movie would be considered boring and labelled as a 'bad' film. For example in the movie Forrest Gump, Tom Hanks (Forrest Gump) make his character look believable by the chemistry he portrays with his best friend Bubba, Jenny, Lieutenant Dan, and his mom. When Jenny hid the fact that she was pregnant with Forrest's baby and he got emotionally happy. I felt this scene because throughout the entire movie he was portrayed as a sweet, caring and naive gentlemen. Another example in the movie Silver Linings Playbook was when Bradley Cooper (Pat) tried so hard get his wife back after the incident that happened 8 months ago. She cut all ties with him and moved on with her life. He did everything he could do to get in contact with his wife and get back with her. He showed all types emotions of signs that he was hurt, frustrated and angry. He portrayed that scene pretty well and made me feel bad for him.

3.) “Acting is not about being someone different. It’s finding the similarity in what is apparently different, then finding myself in there.”
    ― Meryl Streep

I believe Meryl Streep is saying that actors/ actresses are supposed to find similarities between themselves and the character and it definitely shouldn't be about turning themselves into different people. In the movie Forrest Gump, Gary Sinise (Lieutenant Dan) lost his legs in the middle of the movie and I'm pretty sure he has his legs in real life. They used special effects to make it look dramatic. Another example can be taken from the movie Silver Linings Playbook Bradley Cooper who tried to show the audience how difficult it could be for someone who has mental illness and has trouble coping with it.

    1. I think that in the film Forrest Gump Tom Hanks was the best at using emotion an creating empathy because while watching him act you could really feel the emotion he used. You could really tell that he used emotion from within to get into is character. For example in the scene when him an Jenny (Robin Wright) reunite they go running to eachother an you can tell that he really missed her and there was that rise of emotion that he bought to the scene. In the film watched The Notebook I thought the main character Ryan Gosling (Noah) was the best at using emotion an creating empathy. Ithought this because throught the whole movie he used emotion to show how much he loved Rachel McAdems (Allie). One scene that Ryan Gosling showed his emotion for Rachel McAdems was when he saw her walking through town while he was on a bus he tried to get the bus driver to stop but he wouldnt so he opened the doors himself an jumped out. He watched her walk into a restaurant and he saw her on a date with her fiance. You saw how happy he was to see her until he saw he kiss a young man an she had a engagement ring on her finger. you could really feel his emotion because he went from being even more in love with her to realizing what he lost and might nit be able to get back.

    2. I think of the 4 elements disguised I feel that emotion is the most critical I'm creating a good acting film. I think this because in my opinion no movie is a good movie without emotions. I think in the film Forrest Gump Tom Hanks the main character shows a lot of emotion towards Jenny who is the love of his life. In the film I watch the notebook the main character Noah who was played by Ryan Gosling showed emotion towards Allie who he loved very much they had a great relationship that they proved they had throughout the film.

    3. The quote "Acting is not about being someone different it's finding the similarity in what is apparently different, then finding myself in therm." -Merly Streep can mean many things. This quote a saying that when acting you don't have to be someone different you have to find a way in which you can relate to the character an find yourself within them. This quote relates to Ryan Gosling who plays Noah in the notebook because Ryan Gosling is a loving Person who cares about a lot of people and in the movie he playes a caring livening young man.

    Forest Grump
    1. Which actor/actress in Forest Gump and in the film of your choice, were the best at using emotion and creating empathy in the audience? Remember to choose two actors (one from Forest Gump and one from your out of class film) and provide examples of acting performances.
Ans. Gary Sinise put the most emotion in the movie Forest Gump. He shows depression when he lost his legs as in he actually lost them. He also showed how he was so angry at Gump because he blames him for losing his legs. He showed so much emotion in this one part of the film that it made me feel so sorry for him even its just a movie. In the movie The Blind Side Sandra Bullock, she has also shown a lot of emotion in the movie. She’d showed happiness when she was helping out a boy who had nowhere to go. You felt something when that happens like you’ve watched someone doing a good deed. She had also shown anger when at the football field that when the gentlemen was making fun of the kid that she was taking care of she went into a mode that she was about to fight the man. This is showing that she put a lot of emotion to make you believe that they were about to fight.
    2. Which of the four elements of acting we discussed (dress, emotion, dialogue, chemistry) do you feel is the most critical in creating a good acting performance? Use examples from both films to support your argument.
Ans. I believe that chemistry is very critical of making a good performance. In the movie Forest Gump Tom Hanks and Robin Wright had the best chemistry in the whole movie. They showed how these characters felt about each other and how they showed a lot emotion that played there character. These two actors worked very well throughout the whole movie till the end. Tom Hanks and Robin Wright are the perfect definition of chemistry in this movie.
    3. 3. Quote interpretation and explanation:

“Acting is not about being someone different. It’s finding the similarity in what is apparently different, then finding myself in there.”
    ― Meryl Streep
What is Meryl Streep saying? Interpret the quote and then explain. You may want to use examples?
Ans. Meryl Streep is saying that acting is not about being different, what’s the same about you that makes it different. In the role that you are playing as you can find something that you can relate to and can work off of that.

  21. 1) 1)The definition of empathy is defined as having the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. With that said, “Forrest Gump” Was a film that that demonstrates the usage of emotions and it created empathy throughout the audience. The character Forrest Gump is described as a man who rose above his challenges and he proves that determination, courage and love are important in ones, life. The movie is centered on Forrest Gump and the incidents that occur during his life, but during each period in his lifetime he thinks back at Jenny and how important she is to him. For example, Forrest only thinks of his childhood sweetheart Jenny Curran. Throughout the film Forrest wants to prove that anyone is capable of loving anyone. Another film that demonstrates emotions and empathy would be “ A walk to remember”. For instance, the character Landon Carter shows empathy towards Jamie. Although Landon has the perfect life, being popular and being like by everyone in school, he has no reason to change his life that is until Jamie Sullivan enters his life. The Growth and development of Landon happens in the end when he shows empathy towards Jamie. For Example, Jamie turns his life around , even though no one is forcing him to change. As Jamie dies, Landon feels pressured and guilty, which creates an opportunity for Landon to grow, not just as a typical teenage boy but an extraordinary young man.
    2) 2)Although I believe the Four elements of acting including dress, emotions, dialogue, and chemistry each element plays a critical role in creating a good acting performance. I believe that emotions are set apart from the other three elements. In other words, with out emotion being demonstrated in both “ Forrest Gump” and “ A walk to remember”, there would be no essence in both films.
    3) 3)From the quote By Meryl Streep “ Acting is not being someone different. Its finding the similarity in what is apparently different, then finding myself in there” in my interpretation this means don’t pretend to be someone that you are not.
